The next major event in this scene is where Rodolfo and Catherine have been dancing to â€Å"Paper doll† The words â€Å"Paper doll† could represent Catherine, as Eddie is implying that Rodolfo only wants Catherine for his papers; his passport to the country. During this scene Eddie’s anger has been rising and he then makes an attempt to dishonour Rodolfo by making him look foolish and unmanly, â€Å"I mean like me . . . would be like in a dress store. † During this point Catherine and Rodolfo have stopped dancing and turned off the phonograph, showing that Rodolfo has taken notice of this remark and his pent up anger is shown when he unconsciously tears the newspaper in half. Eddie’s jealousy and anger has been rising throughout this scene and in another attempt to make Rodolfo look unmanly and foolish Eddie asks him for a sparring match. Eddie hurts Rodolfo by punching him, â€Å"He feints with his left . . . staggers Rodolfo. Marco rises† He does this to illustrate his power over him and show to Catherine that he is weak and also to warn him this kind of behaviour is shown in animals where males fight each other for the right to mate. Marco has realised what is going on so he â€Å"rises† to have his presence felt by Eddie and to show him that he will back Rodolfo up. During this scene Miller has been building up tension through Eddie’s controversial joke to the sparring match as what seems to be â€Å"comradeship† and jokes, is really a way to get back at the two brothers. At the end of this scene Marco and Eddie have a challenge to see who can lift a chair from one leg to above their heads. Eddie tries and tries but to no success the chair just, â€Å"leans over to the floor†. When Marco attempts this he raises the chair as if like a â€Å"weapon over Eddie’s head† this action is symbolic of Eddie’s fate as he dies because of Marco in the end. It is a gesture that foreshadows the future events yet to occur after this incident. This challenge of strength was also a more blatant warning to Eddie by Marco to show that he could out power and even defeat him in a fight, we know this because of the stage directions, † . . glare of warning into a smile of triumph† These show Marco’s facial expressions. He is smiling because he knows Eddie is no match for him, Eddie also knows this as his, â€Å"grin vanishes† ending the scene and act with a dramatic climax. Eddie cannot defeat Rodolfo and Marco by being â€Å"more of a man† so he is left with one option, betrayal, which brings on his downfall. The next time Eddie encounters Alfieri is his final meeting with him. Eddie comes to him desperate to do something about Rodolfo and Marco as he is immersed by his jealousy after seeing Catherine come out of the same bedroom as Rodolfo in the previous scene. In this scene Alfieri again describes Eddie’s eyes as â€Å"tunnels† this repeated use of the word â€Å"tunnels† suggests that his fate is inevitable as a tunnel has only one way out and so does Eddie’s fate. In fact in this paragraph there are numerous phrases and words that suggest the downfall of Eddie is inevitable such as, â€Å"On December twenty-seventh I saw him next. I normally . . . sat around looking out my window at the bay† It seems unusual for Alfieri to break from his routine by staying in his office as he is a busy man and staying just â€Å"looking out† the window is an illogical way to spend time, suggesting to me it was fate that made him stay in his office that day. Also the word â€Å"transfixed† shows the downfall of Eddie, the meaning of the word transfixed is to be fixed to the spot through fear. Alfieri is scared as he knows what is going to happen next and he is powerless to stop it from happening repeating this idea of inevitability. Eddie uses the same excuses that Rodolfo is homosexual and that he is using Catherine as a way to stay in America. Alfieri tells him as he told him before, â€Å"you cannot stop it† but Eddie’s desperation drives him on. Alfieri warns him, â€Å"the law is only . . . drown you if you buck it now† Alfieri is trying to warn him about the implications that would arise if he was to go against the marriage of Catherine and Rodolfo when he says â€Å"law† he is also talking about the marriage however his warnings are futile as he â€Å"starts turning around† and goes to the phone booth. Eddie knows now that there is nothing more he can do than to call the immigration bureau, his hastiness and desperation impairing his morals, making him go against the things he stands for. In the last scenes we see that Eddie has lost everything, as all of the community turn their backs on Eddie, â€Å"Lipari, the butcher, turns and starts up left†. He has informed the immigration about Marco and Rodolfo which is considered to be the most dishonourable thing a Sicilian man could do and so they have lost all respect they had for him. Eddie still maintains his innocence as he never gave up fighting for his niece till he died and he stuck to his ways. Eddie is a tragic hero as he died because of his fatal flaw; his over possessive love of his niece Catherine. We see that he realises his mistake at the end as his last words are, â€Å"My B.! † this suggests that Eddie has now understood that his loyalties should have stayed with Beatrice his wife. It is Alfieri that recognises that the death of Eddie should persuade you to think that, â€Å"it is better to settle for half†. Alfieri also says that even though he knew that what Eddie did was bad there was still something in him that made him good, â€Å"something perversely pure calls to me from his memory† This conveys that Alfieri still thinks that Eddie is the â€Å"good guy† at the end of the play, as what he did was out of love a passion for his family, even though inevitably this would lead to his downfall and this was the reason why he died the way he did. At the end of the play we agree with Alfieri as the audience considers Eddie to have been hero in his own way.

Comprehensive Discussion The links in the home page are grouped into four main headings: (1) Career Management, (2) Technologies, (3) Operations and (4) Others. The ITPRC Web site may thus be considered as a portal that leads to other Web sites which might be of interest to the network engineer in the areas represented by the headings (Deitel, 2001, pp. 35-37). This is just one example of the richness of information sources that are accessible through the ITPRC portal. One could follow other chains of links to Web sites which eventually lead to the information sought after. A Useful Professional Resource The ITPRC has links to Web sites that meet a wide variety of the needs of data networking professionals. We have seen earlier how the portal could be useful to a graduate student. For an engineer on the job, it has links for finding information related to workaday matters such as the latest viruses circulating on the Internet. For a technology manager who is about to embark on an upgrade of the enterprise network, the industry news links would be useful starting points for learning about developments that could keep his company at par with or ahead of its competitors. Thereafter he could direct his staff to conduct in-depth research on the technology behind the new product offerings and the likelihood that the products have been thoroughly debugged. Other Observations The links to some of the sites are no longer valid. Under the â€Å"Book Sites† link, the very first two Web sites no longer exist. William is not a true son of sir James, the boy was born to sir James’s brother, sir Henry. 10 years ago sir Henry died and his brother, sir James, exercised the right of wardship – he started taking care of William and of those lands that used to belong to his father. William started living with his uncle when he was seven years old. As soon as he moved in to sir James’s castle, William became a student of many studies – he was being prepared for a court life. William is trained to become a good hunter, but also to be able to charm a court lady – he has teachers who teach him to sing songs, tell stories, flirt, dance, he has a special teacher who teaches him the rules of different ceremonies in court, the terminology to use, how to behave, how to dress. All of these activities are taking place in the castle of sir James, which is neither small nor large. The whole territory is surrounded by a stone wall. William’s day begins early in the morning. A servant brings him a basin with water to wash. When he is ready, William goes on to morning hunting exercise, which takes place until breakfast. After that, William has music and dancing lessons followed by yet another practice. â€Å"The Signalman† by Dickens and â€Å"The Withered Arm† by Hardy The story of "The Signalman" opens with the words â€Å"Halloa! Below there†, this short, but effective line is very significant to the plot of the story. A questioning atmosphere is already created, as it is not clear to the reader as to who is speaking, or whom the anonymous figure is being shouted at? The opening paragraph of the "The Signalman" is unexplained, leaving the readers questioning. For example when the Narrator is shouting from above, the Signalman behaves strangely as he looks round to face the tunnel, whereas a normal person would look upwards in response to this. Dickens portrayal of the â€Å"black tunnel† that has a â€Å"barbarous, depressing, and forbidding air† to it creates a mood of anticipation. Moreover, the words expressed are so effective that the reader immediately gets an apparent image of the tunnel and feels more involved in the story. It also raises the question as to why the Signalman looked down there, and this maintains the curiosity. The mood becomes more intense and penetrating as Charles Dickens’s explanations give the impression that one or both of the characters might be spectres. The reason being, that the Narrator considers the Signalman as having something â€Å"remarkable in his manner†, and how he cannot say for his â€Å"life what.† On the other hand, the signalman appears to be afraid of the Narrator, as his reactions to the Narrator calling down suggests that he regards him to be the spectre. The â€Å"dark† setting deep in the trench, which admits â€Å"so little sunlight†, and where the â€Å"on coming rush† of the train causes â€Å"vague vibration† and â€Å"violent pulsation† in the â€Å"earth and air† sets the mood for the supernatural occurrences. This haunts the readers as the narrator feels he has â€Å"left the natural world.† Furthermore, the surroundings and atmosphere of the â€Å"lonesome post† which the Signalman occupies appears very mysterious, especially the â€Å"black tunnel.† The opening scene which is set in the â€Å"cold†, â€Å"damp† and â€Å"lonely† railway cutting near the end of a â€Å"tunnel† is described well, as being â€Å"Extremely deep and unusually precipitous† and â€Å"solitary and â€Å"dismal.† There is particular emphasis on the loneliness of the place; it seems like a location isolated from the real world, making the reader pity the Signalman as he spends many â€Å"lonely hours† there. On July 2, 1976, almost two hundred years since the United States of America passed the Declaration of Independence, the Supreme Court legalized capital punishment (Appendix 1). Capital punishment executed for the crime of theft. Since then there have been an estimated 18,000 to 20,000 people lawfully executed(Espy pp.194). In the eighteenth century, England would punish by death for crimes such as pick pocketing and petty theft. After the 1650's colonist could be put to death for denying the true god or cursing their parents advocates. Capital punishment has clashed for a long time in the forum of public opinion in state legislatures and most recently in courts. In 1972, the case of Furman vs. Georgia (Appendix 1) reached the supreme court. The court decided that punishment by death did indeed violate the Eighth Amendment and the prohibition against "cruel and unusual punishment." Because of this decision death sentences all over the country were set aside. Since then capital punishment has become an increasingly controversial issue. In arguments against the death penalty in the United States, several themes have remained constant. Abolitionists have always claimed that capital punishment is not an effective deterrent, or at least, nobetter than long term imprisonment. Furthermore they argue that it imposed unreasonable risks in the possibility of executing the wrong person; that a willingness to use it tends to brutalize society; that it has never been administered in a morally unobjectable manner; and finally that it is used mainly against relatively defenseless members of minority groups. During the past generation, opposition to the death penalty has been put into the context of a struggle to wipe out racism. Among the foremost writers who have criticized the death penalty is Charles L. Black, Jr., Sterling Professor of Law at Yale Law School. In his book, Capital Punishment: The Inevitability of Caprice and Mistake, he deals with many of the problems surrounding capital punishment. They further led to greater economic diversity between the two groups. The rich bourgeoisies continuously accumulate their wealth at the expense of the poor working class. The result of this marginalization was a growing trend of hostility between the two main groups as each tried to advance its ideals.However, the lack of both political and resource power made the proletarians to lose the battle the few land and capital owners. However, it was common sense to the land owners that any rebellion that would turn to be bloody would interfere with their wealth and thus a compromise was needed to ensure that the relationship between the two groups was always maintained at a manageable level (McKay et al 398).
